• All participants must sign a waiver releasing Urban Ascent from liability and acknowledging their own personal responsibility for safe climbing. Click here for the online waiver.
  • All participants must pass the top-rope belay test or take the class upon entry for first time climbers.
  • All participants must use industry manufactured harnesses.
  • The belay devices provided by Urban Ascent must be used on all pre- setup top-rope climbs.
  • Belayer must remain attentive and stand while belaying.
  • Harnesses must be snug with belt above hips and with the buckle doubled back.
  • The pre-tied figure 8 follow-through knot must be attached to the harness via the belay loop with a locking carabiner.
  • Belay carabiner must be locked.
  • The belay device must be attached to the harness via the belay loop.
  • Belayer must never drop or let go of the rope with brake hand.
  • Belayer must not compromise the brake hand while switching between belaying and lowering.
  • Belayers must be at least 13 years old to belay.

BELAYING

  • Lead tests are free!
  • Provide own rope to test with.
  • Test on a 5.9 route (Staff Choice)
  • Obey all requirements for top-rope climbing.
  • Belayer must be at least 13 years old to belay.
  • Belayer must spot the leader until the first clip is made.
  • Belayer must remain attentive to the lead climber at all times and stand while belaying.
  • Belayer must belay immediately underneath the first clip until the climber has clipped the 3rd quickdraw.
  • Belayer must keep minimal slack in the rope (rope must not touch the ground)
  • Belayer must take the leaders fall without losing control and with minimal rope slippage.
  • The belay device used must be attached to the harness via the belay loop.
  • If a “NO PASS” is given a re-test is allowed in 30 days or take the lead climbing/belay class.

CLIMBING

  • Pay $5 certification fee.
  • Provide own rope to test with.
  • Test on a 5.9 route (Staff Choice)
  • Obey all requirements of top-rope climbing.
  • Leader must clip all quickdraws.
  • Leader must clip carabiners in correct direction. (No back clipping or Z clipping)
  • Leader must use good rope management to prevent a fall with a foot/leg behind the rope. (A fall with the rope wrapped around the foot or leg could result in a dangerous fall causing the leader to flip upside down)
  • Leader must tie into the rope using the figure 8 follow through knot.
  • During the test the leader must take an un-announced fall above the 3rd bolt of 5′ or greater.
  • If a “NO PASS” is given a re-test is allowed in 30 days or take the lead climbing/belay class.
